St James' Cemetery ยป FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the cemetery?

Yes, the cemetery is now a public garden owned by Liverpool City Council and maintained by the Friends of St James' Garden. Directions can be found here.
We are featured on KAYAK and you can find more things to do locally there too!

How do I find the grave of a relative or another person of interest?

This database contains the names of around a quarter of all burials in the cemetery. However, most of the stones were removed from the cemetery in the 1960s and 1970s and so it's unfortunately likely that, if there was a gravestone, it is no longer visible.
You can search for memorials that have been recorded and photographed using this map. Search by name or location number in the top left red bar to find the stone's location.
If you have the grave plot number, you can find the original burial location (where the remains still lie today) with this plan from 1926.

If the name you are looking for isn't in the database you can contact or visit the Liverpool Record Office which holds all burial registers for the cemeteries on microfilm. Most of these have also now been digitised by Ancestry and are available with subscription.

Can I get involved with the Friends of St James'?

Yes! Please message me here or ask at the Friends' Facebook Group.
I'm currently looking for people to help with completing the burials database with information from the Burial Records, so please email me if you're interested in getting involved.

What happened to the old website?

The old website is still available here but all the information has now been transferred. Many thanks to Mike Faulkner who began the site in 1998 and conducted a huge amount of the research that is reproduced here. You can still contact him here.

The old message board is still available to read old posts, but is now closed to new ones in favour of email or the Facebook group.

I have some research of my own - do you want to see it?

Yes please! Email me with anything relevant to the cemetery that you want to share, and join us at the Friends' Facebook page.
