The St. James Cemetery Database
The database is hosted on a separate server from the remainder of the site. I upload the data in text format, the search engine being provided by the remote server.
Using the Database is quite simple, you can leave any field blank and search on the remainder. So typing Smith in the surname field will return every Smith. Inserting John in the Firstname field will narrow the search to all the John Smiths. Inserting a date into the born or died field will narrow the search still further.
Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: I have found the record I searched for, but it does not show an area. Why is this?
A: The only records that show an area are those where the gravestone still exists and I have taken the information from the actual stone. All other records are those taken from the burial registers.
Q: I know when my ancestor died and I know he is buried in St James, but he does not appear on your database, why?
A: Very possibly because that year has not yet been transcribed yet. A good way of checking whether a year has been 'done' is to type that year into the died field and look at the results. If there are very few entries and the majority have an 'area' then this is almost certainly the case.
Q: Yes but that year clearly has been done, but my relative is still not there. Why?
A: This could be one of those cases where the burial register is not very legible. If you know the year they were born and died try typing that in and leave the surname blank. I recently had to alter an entry which I had as Grisholm and should have been Chrisholm. The Database is very versatile and will work on partial searches, this example was found by the user typing in 'hol' and the year of birth.
Q: When will you do the year ????
A: As soon as we can. We are working purely voluntarily on this project so we cannot be any more specific.
Q: Can you do the year ???? next?
A: If we did this for one person we would have to do it for all, so sadly not.
Q: Will you ever charge for this Database?
A: I have no plans to introduce any charges for this database. It is paid for by English Heritage and previously by The Conservation Foundation.
