St James' Cemetery.  Liverpool

Hi, my name is Mike Faulkner and I am the author of this Web Site.

The idea behind this site was born in 1998, when I developed an interest in the history of the Toxteth area of Liverpool.   Having looked at Andy O'Hares superb site about the Canning Street area (see Links), I noticed a reference to St James Cemetery.  I had often wondered what the area of land behind the Anglican Cathedral was, so I decided to find out more.

It became obvious very early on that there was no real information about St James, the odd note in a book or a paragraph here and there was all that had survived.   My first stroke of luck came about when I bought a periodical from 1839, called The Mirror,   This gave me some good background material on the early days of the cemetery.   It also pointed me towards some books which had been written about Liverpool during the Victorian era, and gradually I was able to publish a small web site.

Since then I have gradually collated information about the cemetery, its history and those who are buried there.   Some of this information has been sent to me by visitors to my site (often people who have ancestors buried there).   The site is an ongoing project, I am constantly looking for new information.   The database is being compiled through the hard work of Joyce Jackson.   There is a growing interest in St James Cemetery, The Conservation Foundation and English Heritage are now actively involved  in some regeneration ideas.

I will consider any information about St James Cemetery, its history or its inhabitants for inclusion in the site.   For those people, too many to mention, who have sent information, thank you.   For those who have information, or any questions, I can be contacted:
